Walking across America

This past week you might be wondering, “Where’s Adventure Paul?” I’ll get to that. But first let me respond to some other questions of importance you might have.

Hemlock Nature Trail

Should I invite my friends to like Adventure Paul on Facebook?

Absolutely you should and it’s easy. Simply Like Adventure Paul–then click “Suggest to friends” underneath the profile picture–choose everyone and click Send.

What about Twitter?

Thank you–I almost forgot. Follow and retweet @adventurepaul so that your followers can follow too.

So now that we’re past the self-promotion–where have you been, A.P.?

I’ve spent a lot of time this week thinking about what to do next. During this time, I re-did the look and feel of the website (if you hadn’t noticed). I tried to make the site easier to read and quicker to navigate than before.

I also integrated Twitter more prominently into the website. I hope to use Twitter more productively as a way to micro-blog in the future–as opposed to just a place to write random thoughts or Foursquare check-in.

I’ve streamlined my social media down to Facebook, Twitter, & Foursquare. For now I am through with MySpace, LinkedIn, EmpireAve, and Google Buzz until I have help with the updates. Currently I do it all myself–the adventures, the website, the social updates, the SEO, marketing, & advertising.

The adventures.

It’s time to start adventuring. It’s hard to build an adventure website without the travel. Adventures are unplanned and without delay.

My first idea is to walk across America. Everyone who has done it says experiencing America by foot is the most amazing way to do it. I wouldn’t be the first and or the last to accomplish this. However, no-one would ever do it quite like me.

Here are people to take inspiration from that have walked America or are currently walking.

Steve Vaught walked across America to lose weight and regain control of his life. He started the journey at a huge 410 lbs and by the end, February 2006, weighed 308 lbs. I enjoyed his website The Fat Man Walking.

Mark Klodzinski is still currently on a walk across America that he started this past March to support Warrior’s Wish Foundation. This Friday is his 25th birthday.

Mark Baumer is also finishing up a walk he started this past May from Tybee Island GA to Los Angeles CA.

Will Buchanan and his wife recently walked for liberty.

Most impressively, Mycle Brandy is a four time stroke survivor who is walking across America to raise awareness for the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association.

Cross Roads is a pro-life organization founded in 1995 by Steve Sanborn. Members walk the country by three different routes each summer. During the walk, they stop at local abortion clinics to protest.

72 year old Phil Woods is currently on his second walk across America. His goal is to inspire everyone to take better care of themselves and each other.

Even though Mike didn’t really walk across America–he was hired by Levi’s to film that commercial in 14 days with a crew and an RV–this is an amazing recent video that I have to share.

And last but not least–a pioneer in documenting cross country travel–Peter Jenkins, author of A Walk Across America and The Walk West.

So are you going to walk across the country?

I said that it was my first idea. Check back for what I think of next.

I’d love to visit all 50 states, and walking across the country wouldn’t satisfy that. What would you do if you were Adventure Paul?

In search of adventure,

A.P.

Walking across American sounds interesting but exhausting. I get tired just getting up to use the restroom at night. How about a form of quicker transportation to take you across America?

  • Sarah Hale

OK, first of all I can not imagine being Adventure Paul…I think you are great! I think you should start your own village, buy the land, fence it in, and start your own city. LOL. Like the movie, kinda but without the scary things in the woods….Maybe brush up on your gardening tips first. LOL I would totally help in any way….well I will keep thinking…that one sound less tiresome than the walking thing.

Thanks Sarah. I could use some gardening tips before I go self-sufficient in my scary forest city. Come live there, we'll rule like King and Queen. But once you enter you can NEVER GO BACK!!

Paul – Last but not least should include ROBERT SWEETGALL. Walked 11,208 miles in a year and covered all 50 states. Bob is a long time friend of mind and I was in the printing business and sent him brochures to pick up at certain locations promoting his walk and his cause. He only had a fanny pack with no cart and vehicle support. He has walked 7 times across America since his first journey. If there is an adventurer, BOB is the one with a cause. Search him out on the web, you will find it interesting. Mark Baumer trying to accomplish this in 3 months is ludricous. Robert Sweetgall is the champion of “Walking across America”. JOHN R.

    Thanks John–

I found some info about Robert Sweetgall online at http://www.wac.net/speakers_sweetgall.aspx

He really has walked a lot–I wonder what he thinks about on 12,000 miles. Thanks for bringing him to my attention.

Paul. Rob Sweetgall has already exceeded the overall 12,000 mark. I believe his total walking across America journeys are around 30,000 + miles. Just for your info.! Thank for your reply. JOHN R.
