What is the difference between Wordpress.com and Wordpress.org?

WordPress.com – is a free blogging CMS and hosting service. They host your blog on their domain so your blog’s url is “yourblog.wordpress.com” There are limits to what you can do for free with your website. For instance,  you have to pay to $29 to not have their ads on your site, $15 to edit the CSS for custom designs, and $10 to use your own domain.

There are financial limitations to consider too, especially if you want to make money with your blog. It is against the Terms of Service to have advertisements on a WordPress hosted site. That means no Adsense, ReviewMe, or affiliate networks. You have to use WordPress.org if you plan on profiting with your blog.

The last downfall is that search engines don’t give them as much authority compared to self-hosted WordPress sites (which are phenomenal in regards to SEO). You will get better search engine placement hosting your blog on your own domain. Basically, don’t use WordPress.com. Install your own WordPress site, as explained the question How do I set up a WordPress blog?.

WordPress.org is the best of WordPress.com (all of it) except you host it yourself so you can do whatever you want. It’s merely a free content management system for your blog. It is incredible for search engine optimization and really easy to use. Themes and plugins let amateurs produce professional looking feature rich sites.

When you sign into WordPress.org–the back end looks identical to WordPress.com. So if you’ve got that down, switching will be easy and intuitive.
